Nurturing Young Minds: Why Mental Health Education is Important

The Present Scenario

The academic environment in the Indian educational ecosystem has been reasonably demanding owing to the challenges of personal growth, along with social interactions. Amidst this demand, the psychological well-being of a student often gets overlooked and therefore, the need for a comprehensive approach towards addressing mental health issues among students has never been more pressing. According to a recent survey conducted by NCERT, ‘81% school students in India have reported to experience anxiety and depression due to academic pressure, examination and exam results’. This shows that the factors contributing to the stressors on young minds are manifold, ranging from academic pressure and peer-related influence to fulfilling familial expectations and societal norms.

Importance of Mental Health for Students

A student’s mental health and well-being has its direct correlation with academic performance. It largely determines their ability to grasp concepts, and understand and integrate information in the right manner for better learning outcomes. Even the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasises upon the pressing need for ensuring effective cognitive development coupled with developing holistic and well-rounded individuals. Mental health education, therefore is one of the most effective paradigms through which the creation of an inclusive and supportive school community for students could be established. The common signs and symptoms that we may overlook at times may be the ones that alert us about the potential development of certain mental health concerns. As parents, teachers, and even as ourselves, one must be vigilant about the warning signs in order to take timely cognizance of the situation. These signs include having decreased interest in one’s favorite hobbies, sleeping too much or too little, sudden drop in grades, decline in social interaction, etc.

The Necessary Steps

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the need to prioritize mental health initiatives in fostering a culture of mental well-being within schools. Teachers spend a major part of the day with their students and often surpass the defined boundaries of a teacher to be a mentor and a friend. By encouraging open conversations and dissipating misconceptions surrounding mental health issues, teachers can create an environment where students feel comfortable seeking help and support when needed. Similarly, parents need to be careful, observant, and accepting enough to understand the seriousness of mental health issues, and become their child’s pillar of strength. Instead of reacting in an aggressive manner, be a listener who they can confide in and avoid making any harsh judgements. Consequently, both at school level and parents at home can ensure that a child is able to receive timely help for their mental health challenges, so that they can reach their academic potential and lead fulfilling lives.

It is important to remember that efforts to maintain a healthy mental status begin from day one of human life and should continue till we die. The one thing that we all need to start doing is become more observant of the habits of our loved ones. If they show any signs or even if they look fine, make sure to open that window of having a heartfelt conversation, so they know that they have someone to lean on in life!
