        Solution:      (a)  |–5| = 5        (b) |1| = 1           (c) |–17| = 17       (d)  |3| = 3

        Example 6:  What numbers are represented by the letters P, Q, R and S on the number line given below.

        Solution:      P  represents  –10,       Q  represents  6,        R  represents  –7,      S  represents  0

        Example 7:  Arrange the integers in ascending order:
                       (a) –18, 0, –9, 4, 16                  (b) –200, 3, 0, –50, –201
        Solution:      (a) –18 < –9 < 0 < 4 < 16              (b) –201 < –200 < –50 < 0 < 3

        Example 8:  In the given figure, if O represents 0 (zero), answer the following questions:

                       (a) Write the opposite of P            (b) Write integers from C to R
                       (c) What does D represent?             (d) Is Q greater than C?
        Solution:      (a)  The opposite of P is A as P represents 8 and A represents –8.

                       (b)  The integers from C to R are –5, – 4, –3, –2, –1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
                       (c)  D represents –2                   (d) Yes Q > C as 4 > –5
