The story begins with Silas Marner, the weaver who comes to live in the village of Raveloe after having been falsely accused of theft, by his best friend. In Raveloe, Marner lives a socially isolated life and his only purpose in life is hoarding money. His life is shattered one night when all his savings are stolen. The incident leaves him devastated. Soon after, his life takes a turn when a little girl walks into his cottage. He adopts and names her Eppi. Ultimately, Eppi becomes instrumental in getting him out of his despair and brings hope and a new joy in his life. Silas Marner, George Eliot's third novel, is remarkable for its powerful realism. The novel explores many different issues like, morality, love, redemption, loneliness faith and religious devotion . The novel begins with betrayal and isolation but ends with love and hope. Published in 1861 Silas Marner, like many of Eliot's other novels, became an instant hit. And today after more than a century the book has still not lost its appeal.
